After the Frost

As you can see from this snippet from the weather networks "last 24 hours" in my area, we not only had a frost, but the temperature fully dipped below zero between 5 and 6 this morning.

Although I had fully covered my plants (OK, not so much the tomatoes, but everything else) I still got frost damage to many of them.  I'll see if any recover over the day as it's hard to tell if they are just limp or completely done.  But I'm still fine ... I had many more plants than I really needed although I was more than happy to have them all.  So even if I lose half, it will be okay.  But keeping my fingers crossed!

This is from a local news report this morning:

Temperatures across Ottawa and region plummeted below the freezing mark Friday night, with the wind chill falling to as low as -10, according to Environment Canada.

  1. Yup - had the below 0 temps here too. Luckily, I didn't plant out any frost tender plants yet. They were all hardening off, so I made sure to bring them all inside for the night. I had actually been planning on doing some transplanting yesterday, but decided to hold off on even the hardier ones like lettuce until today. My tomatoes & peppers aren't due to get planted outside until this coming week...couldn't come soon enough - they are all looking very sorry in their little pots/cell packs.

    1. The weather was just so warm earlier! :) That's what happens when you take a risk. But I lost some, and those that survived are way ahead of where they would normally be so I don't feel too bad.

  2. Ouch. I think only one thing out there in my garden right now is not frost hardy. I risked planting the basil. Luckily we haven't gotten all that low recently, just a bit cooler than normal. And we are due for a warm up. So all those frost hardies are going in the garden tomorrow. Then I'll cross my fingers.

    1. Surprisingly, the basil made it where other plants (similarly covered) did not. Now that I've had another look, it's not too bad. I did lose a bunch of plants but I had planted a crazy amount so what I'm left with is OK. Except the sugar pumpkins - lost every one of them. Darn. I guess I still have time to get more started ...

  3. Sorry to hear about the frost. The weather this year is very wild. I have neighbors who already planted tomatoes and here they lucked out so far. Mine go in this week.

    1. I didn't fair too badly, mainly because I had a lot of extras. A friend of mine lost every one of his tomato plants - 65 of them! Ugh ...
