I normally only post for Harvest Monday's what I have harvested up to Sunday evening. Since today is a Civic Holiday in Ontario, I am at home and thought I'd do one more picking ... and a colourful one it is! Included here are kale, chard, zucchini, yellow crookneck squash, Delinel and Royal Burgundy beans, my first of the Yukon Gold potatoes and a couple of fingerlings, a pimiento pepper, Hungarian Hot Wax peppers, jalapenos and my second small harvest of tomatoes (see below for my first harvest). Quite a haul for just 20 or 30 minutes of work this morning!
Also from this morning is another batch of escarole. None of them have fully matured and I'm still just picking them to thin out the plants (I planted them far too close together):
And these two spaghetti squash!! I'm not sure if they are fully mature, but I really don't need monster sized squash. The one on the left is already 5 pounds!
This photo below is from Wednesday's pick and includes more beans (both Delinel and Royal Burgundy), another zucchini squash, a small broccoli side shoot, various greens (kale, chard, lettuce, arugula).
Plus more of these Pimiento peppers:
I also harvested this lettuce from my "summery melody" mix packet. It has bolted like my other lettuce heads but I think it was something like Michelle's Italienischer. Obviously not the amazing size she was able to grow, but I'm pretty sure it was the same variety.
And I've pulled the rest of the kohlrabi. I did not get much size out of mine compared to others I've seen, but I really enjoy the taste so will try them again next year.
The other harvest this week was Saturday morning and included more beans, another mini broccoli side shoot, some ridiculously tiny carrots, a crookneck squash, my first ripe tomatoes and parsnips.
I'm quite excited about the parsnips - these are Albion parsnips - as it is the first time I've grown them. I knew they grew like carrots so assumed the upper part of the plant would be similar. So wrong! The above-ground portion of the parsnip is HUGE, easily 3 to 4 times the size of the root.
These few baby carrots were also pulled later Saturday to thin out the carrots. I am WAY behind on carrots and beets for a variety of reasons and I certainly hope to get some good ones soon.
And that's my review of the week ... pop by Daphne's place to see what other folks are doing this week in their garden.
What amazing harvests! I'm also surprised by the parsnip leaves as I've never grown them before either. And I can't believe you are already harvesting spaghetti squash - that's amazing! The only winter squash I may get are the butternuts and I have only now seen some tiny (as in less than 1/2") fruits on them. I'm hoping they mature in time as I have no idea how quickly they size up.
ReplyDeleteI checked out last year at this time and I had a spaghetti squash late August so this is early for sure. And so big! It's been such good weather ... rainy, then hot, rainy, then hot!
DeleteSome colorful things from your garden. Have you figured out what you are going to use the pimiento peppers for? They certainly are attractive.
ReplyDeleteI stuffed them with a quinoa and black bean mix. Perfect for stuffing as they have such a flat bottom for stability!
DeleteThat is a large harvest for just a few minutes' work. Congratulations! Those pimientos seem very productive.
ReplyDeleteThat is a large spaghetti squash! I stopped growing them because my wife and I couldn't eat or give them all away. Your first photo is colorful indeed!
ReplyDeleteThat is one nice harvest. And a 5 pounds spaghetti squash is huge. I think I tried growing those one year, but the SVB destroyed them before I got anything.
ReplyDeleteNice abundance harvest, I love the first photo it's so pretty. I grew spaghetti squash once as in Dave's case we couldn't use them all or give them away.
ReplyDeleteI would be happy to have enough to give away ... I have 3 plants and 4 squash (two of which I just picked). Not sure why I don't get more veggies per plant, guess I need to work on that. Hopefully I'll get more before the season ends.
DeleteThat is an interesting lettuce, but It looks a little different from the Italienischer which is an oakleaf type. I grew a red/green leaf lettuce once with long pointy leaves like that called "Ear of the Devil", but that was obviously a different one since the leaves were red. There's so many interesting lettuce varieties. It's been a long time since I've had, much less grown, Spaghetti Squash. My husband loves it, I'm sure he would be really happy if I grew it again. How interesting that others have found it difficult to give away! What a great idea to stuff the pimientos, they must be delicious.
ReplyDeleteYour pimiento peppers are absolutely stunning. I am not keen on spaghetti squash either, so echo what the others have said.
