Freezing temperatures (and a bit of snow) hit over the weekend.
To be honest, I am happy about it as it means I can finally pull out the flowers and (now) dead plants to prepare the garden beds before winter.
It's temporary - it's going to warm up again in the coming week. Last Wednesday night was another frost and I decided to just harvest all of the beans and let the plants die. I can't be bothered to keep covering them up every day or two.
Same thing with the last pumpkin plant. Unfortunately, I still didn't get a ripe pumpkin! I hope this pumpkin is riper than the last one I harvested prematurely - it turned out to have almost no flavour at all.
I have nothing from the greenhouse this week as I'm intentionally not going inside ... I don't want to let out what little warmth there is. I'll check it out mid-week when the temps are a bit warmer. So my main harvests this week are root veggies: Albion parsnips and Nantes carrots.
And that's my weekly submission for Harvest Monday. Pop on over to Our Happy Acres to see what other gardeners are doing this week.
I know what you mean...I'm not really sad about the frost either. But at the same time I know it means long nights of missing the garden. Your root vegetables are impressive.
ReplyDeleteThose parsnips and carrots are lovely! I've never tried growing parsnips for some reason, though I know they are tasty. I'm not sad about the frost here either.
ReplyDeleteI'll also add my "not sad about the frost" to the chorus - I have so many indoor projects that have been put on hold all summer that I'm looking forward to putting the garden to bed so that I can get going on them. Beautiful carrots - I'm kind of dreading pulling my carrots as I'm worried I'll be looking at mini carrots the size of those you see in those little bags in the grocery store. I guess at least mine will be "real" baby carrots, and not full sized carrots that are shaved down ;)
ReplyDeleteI still have some much smaller carrots in the ground that were planted long before these ones. Just not the right conditions, I guess. Good luck with yours!
DeleteWell, I can't join the chorus, no frost here yet. Your parsnips and carrots look great. I think I may get a few parsnips from the garden this year, finally, after a number of half hearted failed attempts at growing them. No carrots though, I never got around to sowing them.
ReplyDeleteI am not sad about the frost either. I am tired and the garden is tired. It is time. Your parsnips are very impressive. I stopped growing them because they are so inconsistent for me. Yours are absolutely beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks, this is the first time I've grown parsnips so feeling pretty good about it!
DeleteGreat harvest!! I have to admit I'm looking forward to frost! It's been a busy garden year and it's time for a break!
ReplyDeleteOh man, I am not ready for frozen water buckets and frost touching everything in sight...I know it's coming, but I hope it holds off just a bit longer here!
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime, your harvests are beautiful! And, I don't blame you for not going into the greenhouse...I'd be keeping that baby as warm as possible, too :-)
