Harvest Monday: June 29, 2015
This is my submission for Daphne's Dandelions Harvest Monday collection. I've got some of the same, some new.
The photo is a recent harvest of Batavian endive ... a.k.a. escarole. It's not mature yet, I'm just thinning out the rows. This batch was sauteed with mushrooms for a yummy pasta.
The rest of the week's harvest is more of the same ... I've pulled all of the Music garlic because of the leek moth infestation. I have left the Red Russian garlic in for now. There is a teeny weeny strawberry amongst the peas in the picture below.
And some more peas, a bit of kale, basil, lettuce greens and a few radish. Busy days now, will catch up on other stuff when I can. Looking forward to seeing what others have on the go.

I like escarole and am growing it, but my heads are still a little small. It's great sauteed with garlic. Sometimes I smash a cooked potato into it. Your Music garlic heads look pretty good size. Were you going to try to dry some of it? Maybe you will get storable heads, just a little small.
ReplyDeleteThe Music heads are quite a bit larger than the Red Russian garlic I'm growing. It's my first time growing Music and was pleasantly surprised. This is all I have of Music so I'll probably eat this quick enough. I've left the Red Russian in the ground to size it up a bit more in the hopes of being able to store some as it's quite a bit smaller.

DeleteLooks like the harvests are starting to roll in for you! And I agree with David - it's quite early still and your garlic looks so big! I don't think I've ever tried escarole - must add that to my list of veg to try.
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I had wanted to grow regular endive but couldn't find any seeds. So I ended up with escarole and am glad I did as it's very good.
DeleteThe last time I tried to grow escarole it just bolted before making a proper head, make that the last two times, so I haven't figured that veggie out yet. The garlic is surprisingly big. The up side to harvesting it early is that it is so sweet and mild at that stage, I love it.
ReplyDeleteYes, i agree, that garlic tastes great when it's a bit young and used so fresh!
DeleteThat escarole look good! I've grown it before but didn't really know how to use it, except in salads. I guess I didn't think about cooking it!
ReplyDeleteNot only my first time growing it, my first time eating it ... I googled some recipes and realized it could be cooked like chard or spinach!
DeleteIt might be early, but the garlic looks good. I've been picking a bulb here and there for cooking. I still have some of last years downstairs, but the fresh is so much better.
ReplyDeleteI pulled 5 bulbs just an hour ago and found one had a leek moth larvae on the head so it got thrown into the back bushes (I should be burning them I guess). But the heads without damage are looking good for sure. I also have dried up garlic from last year - I think it's going into the compost, hard to compare with the fresh stuff.
DeleteYour garlic looks so good, I've only grown it in pots before which doesn't give you very big bulbs! I'll have to try some in the ground :)
ReplyDeleteNice garlic harvest, I have not grown garlic in a while, they don't keep well in our area, 2 -3 months is about max I can store them.

DeleteI see your strawberry! The garlic looks nice and clean too. I've been pleasantly surprised by mine,I thought most hadn't really developed into separate cloves but more have done than at first glance.
