Harvest Monday: July 18, 2016
A few new harvests this week, with one of my favourites being the new potatoes. These are Linzer potatoes and were served, as I always do with my first potatoes of the year, with butter and truffled oil. I would not normally harvest potatoes quite this early but a few of the plants have died off - not sure the reason but I will harvest a few more plants in the coming weeks then leave the remainder for at least another month or so.
Along with the small amount of potatoes was another accidental onion harvest plus what is likely the last of the Bon Vivant salad mix. The plants were just trimmed as I always do but I think I'll pull them out and reseed for a fall lettuce harvest soon.
The other new harvest this week is Tiara cabbage. The outer leaves were pretty damaged by worm holes so I cut them open just to make sure they were OK inside ... looking good!
I've pulled up the only two cabbage that I managed to grow leaving room in the bed for the broccoli plants to get a bit more space. I've only had the one broccoli spear so far which was included in last weeks Harvest Monday. It was tossed with olive oil and baked along with a red pepper and some garlic scapes and eaten with bread and goat cheese.
I can't believe I've never eaten garlic scapes that way ... they were delicious and a bit crispy!

Nice job on the cabbages. I'm eyeing my Golden Acre cabbages and wondering when they will be ready.
ReplyDeleteThanks David. It seems these Tiara, being an early variety, are the only ones I have success with in my climate. So sticking with them!
DeleteOoh, roasted garlic scapes sound yummy! I like them on the grill too. Beautiful spuds you have there too! There's nothing like really, really new potatoes. It hasn't been my best year for potatoes or cabbage either one.
ReplyDeleteToo bad for you about the potatoes so far. They are truly one of my favourite harvests. Definitely will try grilled scapes next year, just never got around to getting the bbq out this year.
DeleteThe cabbage is looking really good! Garlic scapes are a harvest that have eluded me. Even when my garlic hasn't been ruined by rust it generally hasn't produce scapes, one of the few downsides of a mild climate. And those potatoes, they are perfection!
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle. A shame about your garlic ...
DeleteMy Adirondack red potato and all blue potato plants have died off too, would love to know the reason. Am debating whether to dig them up or leave them in the ground. I should try roasting garlic scapes, thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteWell, I decided to leave a few of the "died off" plants for another week or two in the hopes they'll size up. The rest of the plants are still green, so weird that it was only a few.
DeleteThat's so great you're still getting lettuce and those potatoes look gorgeous. I would love to grow potatoes here, but after a big failure I never tried again.
ReplyDeleteOh, I know how you feel on failed crops - I have many on my list of "never growing again!".
DeleteRoasted garlic scapes sound delicious! And your cabbage looks perfect.
