Harvest Monday: June 13, 2016


This is my submission to Harvest Monday, hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.  This week I've finally had my first harvest of lettuce!  This is Bon Vivant mix from William Dam Seeds.

I've also harvested some long overdue arugula - in fact, it had bolted some time ago and I just got around to pulling it out.  It was made into a sort-of pasta dish with soba noodles and lots of garlic.



And I've had a nasty cold / cough for some time now and decided to take advantage of some mullein growing in my yard to make a tea - supposedly good for respiratory ailments.


And that's my update for this week!!

  1. Your lettuce looks so soft and tender, and the soba noodle dish looks tasty. I love how fast and easy buckwheat noodles cook up. I hope you feel better soon, summer colds can be the worst.

  2. The noodle dish looks yummy. I love arugula with pasta, even if it has bolted like yours. I've never had mullein tea but I hope it helps your cold!

    1. Sometimes when arugula bolts, the stems get fuzzy. For some reason, it wasn't as bad this time so still edible.

  4. Nothing worse than a summer cold, it's just not the time to be slowed down by feeling crummy. I hope your tea helps. All the fresh lettuce can't hurt either!

  5. We have tons of mullein, and I never knew it had medicinal value. How did it work, and how did you make the tea?

    1. Yes, it is well known for treating respiratory ailments. Some people can react to the hairs (the fuzz) so it is recommended to strain the liquid after steeping. But I really just throw some leaves into water that has been boiled and let it steep then pour into a mug. It's a bit "earthy" tasting, but not bad tasting at all. I have friends who use it a lot, but to each its own ...

  6. Beautiful fresh salad greens & glad you were able to take advantage of the arugula in your garden. Had not heard of mullein before...had to look that one up.

    1. I hate to waste things from the garden especially if it has bolted or I'm just not on top of harvesting. So yes, glad that I could make use of it.

      I have never seen mullein until this particular property I am at. Amazing how much the flora changes even locally ...

  8. I love the homegrown soft flavour packed salad greens, so am planning to do a bit more this year. Your harvest is small but tasty! Soba noodles seem to be popular too, I had some at the weekend too drowned in miso.
