Harvest Monday: August 28, 2017

Tromboncino squash

I spent four of the last five days at the LPGA tournament in Ottawa, pretty fun to watch some amazing ladies play golf!  So I have not spent much time in the garden.  And the little time I did spend was harvesting ... mostly cucumbers.  These are Spacemaster cukes.

I've pulled the cucumber plants as they were dying off and I now have about 15 pounds - guess I'm making pickles this year!  The picture above is only about half of what I now have in the kitchen.  And in the bottom left corner, you'll see a Sweet Dumpling, the first winter squash to be harvested.

And the main photo shows three more tromboncino squash - in the picture, you may see that two of them had started to sprout and one even has a blossom on its sprout!  One was sliced and grilled for dinner Sunday.

I've also harvested about 5 pounds of tomatoes.  Some (shown above, mostly forme de coeur) have already been processed into 3 litres of salsa, along with a few sweet peppers from last week.  And the rest will likely be canned as puree or as a pasta sauce - haven't decided yet.

And here's a link to the Harvest Monday collections hosted by Our Happy Acres.  I will pop on over there myself and see what other gardeners are doing this week!

  1. I love the way the Tromboncino squash twists and turns, but it does make it more difficult to slice. Whatever, it always tastes great. I'm still waiting for my tomatoes to really start producing and then it will be a battle with the rodents.

    1. Yes, well me too on the rodent battle. I've tossed about 1/4 as many tomatoes as I have kept due to chunks bitten off. Arrggh.

    1. Hey Lou! This is only my second (third?) year with the sweet dumplings. I like them simple, with a bit of butter and salt ... perfect for single servings or two sides.

  3. With 15 pounds of cukes - I hope you're making pickles! The tromboncinos are so productive. They are keeping us supplied for sure.

    1. I tried the tromboncino last year but had many issues with all squashes and didn't get more than one. This year, the plants are as productive as everyone promises!

  4. There has been a bumper year here for cucumbers too> It is so good come the cold darks days of Winter to have that freshness of cucumber pickles, isn't it?

  5. Yes, the cucumbers are just overflowing right now, aren't they? I have to pick a bunch today, actually. The season is coming to an end and I, for one, am ready - and hopeful that this will be a good, cold winter that gets rid of a lot of the critters that have plagued my garden this year!
