Harvest Monday: May 16, 2016

Well, the experiment of growing greens in the greenhouse in early spring didn't work out very well.  I forgot that we don't really have "spring" here.  The weather usually goes from super cold to super hot in a short period of time (and back to super cold now and then).  I sowed some arugula seeds as soon as I could but it has already bolted before I could eat any!  I fed it to the compost.

The radish were bolting as well which is why I've harvested them even though they are quite small (but still tasty).  I have also harvested some more asparagus but I still have only half of the 12 crowns producing right now and hoping the others kick in soon!

  1. You have certainly described the weather here. Super cold (and wet) to super hot (and dry). Radishes look nice anyway. You don't want them too big. Your asparagus should be coming up soon.

    1. Yes I think the few spears I've had of asparagus are the early starters, so hoping the rest starts soon.

  2. I guess I shouldn't complain about the "May Gray" weather that will segue into "June Gloom". Fog fog and more fog, just where is that sun? Ok, no, I'm not complaining, really... Sorry about your arugula, that's so disappointing. But the radishes do look great.

    1. Apparently Canadians are known for the non-stop weather chatter. So even if you have nothing to complain about ... there is always something to complain about. :)

  3. New techniques and circumstances often lead to just as many failures as successes (maybe even more so!), but you just never know until you try. At least you got some yummy radishes out of it! With our cold weather lately, my radishes are just sitting there, probably thinking it's March instead of May!

    1. Yes, that's it, new things don't always work out but it's a good learning lesson (as they all are!).

  4. The radishes do look nice. My early arugula has bolted too, and I suspect the ones I planted today won't last long either. I hope the rest of the asparagus plants get going soon!

    1. Ahh, too bad about your arugula as well then. I did enjoy the nice splash of colour from the radishes.

  5. Aw, the radishes do look very good though. I forgot to sow them at the same time as my parsnips, the seedlings of which have now all been eaten by slugs anyway!

    1. I had nibbles on some of my plants but I think it's grasshoppers though could be slugs. Too bad about your parsnips.
