Harvest Monday: December 14, 2015
I've been somewhat absent recently from the blog as my computer died, again. It's been a troubling year technologically for me ... it's the second computer I've lost in about 5 months. When will I remember to back up my files?! Ah well, I have most important things backed up but I forget about all those photos I take each week. Overall, I've probably lost half of 2015 gardening pics between the two computer crashes. But at least most of them made it to a blog post.
As it turns out, I didn't bother to harvest anything last week anyway since all I have left is the kale. So I waited until this weekend and here it is shown in the main photo ... not quite the last of it but not sure how much more it will grow. The wonderful weather we are having has to turn colder at some point! As much as I love the better-than-average conditions, I worry that it means winter is just delayed - meaning that when it does hit, it will stay later into the spring. That won't be good!!
Also not good right now is my car!
I hit a deer :(. I'm totally fine as I was able to slow down a bit before impact but not so fine for the poor little deer that I hit. Deer-vehicle collisions are unfortunately all too common in this area - especially at this time of the year; with the rutting period and hunting season, the deer are running all over the place and generally less cautious about their movements. This is not the first time I've hit a deer, sadly to say.
But back to the kale. I have lots of kale in the fridge from a previous harvest and now this new batch. Luckily, I have treated myself this holiday season with a new blender to make up smoothies! It hasn't arrived yet, but I hope to share some fun smoothie recipes in 2016 once I've figured it all out.
As always, I look forward to seeing what other folks are harvesting, or doing with their harvests, this time of year so I'll be popping over to Our Happy Acres for the weekly Harvest Monday submissions.

I'm glad you're safe after that collision, it's definitely a dangerous time of year on the road. Your kale looks incredible. Do you end up removing the stems of that variety of kale? The stems seem smaller than other types.
ReplyDeleteThanks Phuong. Yes, I usually remove the stems when eating it raw, although it's a bit tougher at this time of the year so I more often cook it - in which case, I chop it all including stems.
ReplyDeleteOoh, that doesn't look good. Glad you are OK. The dinosaur kale looks nice. Mine did not like the Fall weather and is pretty chewed up by caterpillars, so I just pulled it.
ReplyDeleteThis is the first time I've grown greens into the fall, let alone almost WINTER! I'm pretty thrilled. Sorry to hear yours didn't last longer.
DeleteYikes - sad to say that I've been there. I was driving my preschool aged kids to a play group and the deer came out of nowhere. I had no time to react at all & wasn't even sure what happened until I pulled over. Poor thing didn't make it and we were all fine, although a bit shook up - me more than the kids as they thought we hit a big bump in the road and I didn't want to upset them with the truth.
ReplyDeleteAnd your kale is envy inducing - it wasn't a good kale year for me as it was one of the casualties of the willow root invaded bed.
Ooh, accident with kids in the car. Very glad to hear everyone was fine! Thanks on the kale ... I sure do have a lot in the fridge now, lucky it lasts forever.
DeleteOuch on the deer collision and the computer problems. I've seen them here in broad daylight in the road that runs in front of our house. Good that you are ok! I'm looking forward to your smoothie recipes. Mine tend to be the same old thing with minor variations, and it would be nice to get new ideas. I do love kale in them, plus arugula is another favorite.
ReplyDeletePesky deer, everyone in the cities just think they're cute. I'll have to get my friend at work to share her kale smoothie recipe - I've tried it and it's pretty good.
DeleteOh what an awful experience, I'm so glad you came through it ok. The deer are all over the place here too and I've seen more than one laying on the side of the road. I think Old Man Winter is delivering his goods along the west coast rather than out your way, we've had a series of storms come through, although here we've been at the edge of them for the most part and escaped the worst of it. But it's been quite chilly and I've not been motivated to spend much time in the garden.
ReplyDeleteYes, my family is in Vancouver area and sounds like they are getting plenty of miserable weather lately. Too bad for you. A great time to curl up in front of a fire with a good book!
