Harvest Monday: July 25, 2016

The harvests have more variety as each week passes.  These rainbow carrots were an accidental harvest while weeding.

And I've picked my first tomatoes and some bunching onions.  The fingerling potatoes were from a volunteer plant that had grown up in the space I planted shallots and it needed to be removed.  The potatoes (parboiled), along with some Tuscan kale and that one broccoli spear were tossed with olive oil and baked in the oven for a quick dinner one night.

And more potatoes and carrots were harvested for a stew later in the week.

I've had a few Xanthia peppers throughout the week.  The above picture also shows one Ancho and one King of the North.  I've had what looks like Blossom End Rot on some peppers.  Since they are all in the greenhouse, I should be able to manage the watering and nutrients but obviously not quite consistent in my methods.

And just late Sunday I picked some Royal Burgundy beans and pulled some red onions (and a shallot) while cleaning up the beet bed.

Yesterday I posted about this year's garlic harvest so that wraps up my latest harvests.

Please check out Our Happy Acres on this Harvest Monday to see what other gardeners are doing this week.

  1. You do have a lot of variety in your harvests! I've seen sunscald on one of my early bell peppers but thankfully no BER yet. Those Royal Burgundy beans are sure pretty. It's too bad the purple ones don't stay purple when cooked.

    1. Hmm, I considered sunscald (though wasn't thinking of calling it that :)). That might be what I see now and then on some of them. Agreed on the beans - would be pretty cool if they cooked up purple!

  2. Nice harvest. Carrots, tomatoes and peppers already. You are way ahead of me. I have occasionally seen BER on my peppers but it is not common. Not sure there was anything you could have done to avoid it.

    1. Thanks Dave. Yes, the carrots are pretty small still but I like a few baby carrots early on. And my greenhouse has certainly put me ahead of my usual pepper schedule!

  3. That is some nice variety in your harvests. I occasionally get BER in my peppers, and like David said I'm not sure there's anything that can be done about it. You are ahead of me with the ripe peppers, I'm still waiting.

    1. I think you and David both know better than me on BER, so I'll take your word for it that I'm not doing anything too wrong.

  4. Lovely harvests! It seems I get BER on the first peppers and then the later ones are fine.

    1. OK good to know, maybe they'll improve here on in. It has only affected a few so far. I just love July harvests when everything starts coming in!

  5. Wow - look at those tomatoes! I only harvested my first tiny Sungolds yesterday as none of the larger ones have started to ripen yet. I have to get to harvesting the garlic soon too - yours looks great! I've not watered it for a couple of weeks and was planning on harvesting it any day now...then of course, we get a torrential downpour yesterday so fingers are crossed that it dries out ok.

    1. Yes, well your Sungolds looked tasty. I have a few more of the chocolate cherry tomatoes coming in this week, they won't last any longer than yours did!

  6. Mmmm, new potatoes and kale sounds delicious. What do you think of Tuscan Kale? I've been debating whether to purchase seeds after reading it can be strongly flavored. Your garlic and onions look so good.

    1. Tuscan Kale is definitely tougher than other varieties but if you pick it small, it can be very tender. It's the first kind I grew so even though I grow other kinds, I prefer it. It's great to cook with. I'm not sure I find it stronger in flavor, but I might just be more used to it.
