Harvest Monday: October 12, 2015

This is my submission for Harvest Monday, now hosted by Dave at Our Happy Acres.  It's a light week but there is still plenty on the go.  I still have a lot of parnsips and carrots in the ground and just giving them more time to size up.  I also have some beets but don't anticipate getting anything than some marbles based on the size they are now.

The pepper harvest in the main photo is from the greenhouse again.  Clockwise starting at the top:  One single Hungarian Hot Wax, a few Hinklehatz, one small King of the North, Sweet Pickle Peppers and a few Jimmy Nardello.

The rest of the week's harvest came the day before the light frost when I picked the chard and arugula.

And that's it for me this week.  Otherwise, I've been keeping busy cleaning up the garden and getting the garlic planted (see previous post).

  1. I have never grown parsnips before, though I hear they are tasty after they've been frosted and frozen. I need to think about planting garlic here too. It's going where the sweet potatoes are now, so I need to get them dug first!

    1. That was my problem too, waiting for first round of crops to be done so I would have a place for the garlic!

  2. Isn't it just so bittersweet when the garden begins winding down?

I need to get the garlic in the ground here, too...though I've always thought that Halloween was my deadline, but have recently been told to wait until mid-November here so as to avoid early sprouting before the hard freezes of winter sock us in...it'll be an adventure :-)

    1. I've planted as early as end of Sept but also later in October. It doesn't seem to make a huge difference and I'm always worried about winter hitting early here so I tend towards the earlier dates.

  3. Oh, I'm really loving that chard - Most of mine are having issues with black aphids and I've recently uncovered them in the hopes that some predators make a good lunch out of them (what's with all the aphids this year??). I actually hope we get a frost soon - I'm fairly certain the chard would sail through that, but the aphids would be history.

    1. I had a second frost here Friday night and the chard was fine through a light one (I hadn't bothered to cover some of it up).

  4. The chard is really pretty. It should not be bothered by a light frost I think. My garlic goes in this coming weekend. The peppers look tasty!

    1. Thanks, yes the peppers are good - well, except the teeny King of the North which was obviously immature and so a bit bitter. But still fine added into a dish.

  5. Lovely chard Susie, it's a good basketful. I put in my garlic recently, earlier than normal but Monty Don said it was the time to do it so I thought I might as well! I put it in the spot some of my potatoes were this year. Once I've removed a couple of squash plants I'll sow autumn broad beans there. One out one in!
